H.E. Ambassador Mr. Yang Houlan's Address at the Inauguration of Nepal-China Sports Friendship Society
(November 14, 2011)
2011/11/14

Respectable Mr. Lila Mani Paudel, Secretary of Prime Minister Office,

Mr. Jeevan Ram Shrestha, President of Nepal-China Sports Friendship Society,

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

Good evening.

It is my great pleasure to attend the inauguration ceremony of Nepal-China Sports Friendship Society. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warm congratulations to the establishment of Nepal-China Sports Friendship Society and my sincere thanks to all the participants here for your long-time contributions to China-Nepal Friendship.

China and Nepal are good neighbors, good partners and good friends. The friendly exchanges between us have a long history. The stories of Manjushree, master monks Fa Xian and Xuan Zang, Arniko and Princess Bhrikuti are still being talked about by Chinese and Nepalese today. The friendly exchanges link the two peoples closely.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal 56 years ago, no matter how the international and domestic situations changed, our bilateral relations have developed healthily, smoothly and comprehensively, the exchanges and contact in various areas such as politics, economy, culture and security have continued to deepen. The long-time exchanges and cooperation have promoted the prosperity of our culture, which are cherished by our peoples and will continue in the future.

Sports plays an important role in people-to-people contact. The friendly exchanges and cooperation in sports section between China and Nepal can be traced long time back. As early as 1960s, the Chinese government started to assist Nepal for constructing various sports stadiums and gymnasiums. I am happy to see that today Dashratha Stadium is still a main venue for holding Nepal’s various sports games. The swimming pool and shooting gallery located in Lalitpur, along with many sports equipments provided by Chinese government are still being actively used by the coaches and athletes of Nepal. The sports high level officials of the two countries have good relations. We always trust and support each other in international sports affairs. The success of the 8th South Asian Games in Nepal and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games witnessed the close and sincere cooperation of China and Nepal in sports section. The two countries have exchanges coaches and athletes in the sports such as pinpang, badminton, football, wushu etc. By learning and improving from each other, we not only enhanced the mutual competitiveness in international sports games, but also promoted the friendship between us.

As the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, I have been here for almost 5 months. Although it is not a long period of time, Nepal’s diligent and talented people, beautiful mountains and rivers have already impressed me a lot. But what impressed me most is the deep friendship that Nepali people extended to Chinese. No matter where I go in Nepal, I feel the natural friendly sentiment from Nepali people to China, and the expectation of them to develop the China-Nepal relations. I have met with many Nepal–China friendly organizations. They have made positive contributions to promote the China-Nepal friendship. I believe Nepal-China Sports Friendship Society will play a significant role in promoting the cooperation between Chinese and Nepalese peoples in sports section. Wish the prosperity of Nepal’s sports and may China-Nepal friendship lasts forever!

Thank you.
