H.E. Ambassador Mr. Yang Houlan's Address at the Opening Ceremony of the 5th China Festival
(December 11, 2011)
2011/12/11

Right Honorable Mr. Baburam Bhattarai, the Prime Minister of Nepal,

Right Honorable Mr. Narayan Kaji Shrestha, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister,

Your Excellency Mrs. Sushma Sharma, Minister of State for Federal Affairs, Constituent Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture,

Your Excellency Mrs. Zhao Shaohua, Vice-Minister of Culture of China,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon.

It’s my great pleasure to attend the Opening Ceremony of the China Festival. The China Festival in Nepal was initiated in 2003 and has been held once every two years since then. This year is the fifth time. Thanks to the strong support given by the governments and the social communities of both China and Nepal, the China Festival has become a comprehensive culture gathering which covers performances, trade fairs, picture shows and film exhibitions. It has become an important platform to link friendly exchanges and cooperation in culture between the two countries.

China and Nepal are neighbors linked by mountains and rivers. The friendly exchanges can be traced back to the ancient times so similarities in culture can be seen today. Chinese monk Fa Xian in Jin Dynasty and Xuan Zang in Tang Dynasty came to Nepal for pilgrimage. Nepal’s famous artist Arniko went to China and built White Pagoda Temple. These have become much-told tales of the two peoples from generation to generation. Since the two countries established the diplomatic ties in 1955, the bilateral relations have maintained sound, stable and comprehensive no matter how the international and domestic situation changes. In 2009, the two sides established a Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation featuring ever-lasting friendship. Since then, the relations between the two countries have stepped to a new height.

In recent years, the exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, culture, sports, religion and education have been increasing and gaining a much better momentum. In terms of politics, the increasingly frequent high-level visits promote communications between the governments and political parties. In terms of economy, the bilateral trade volume hits record high and promotes win-win cooperation between the enterprises of the two countries. In terms of culture, the continuously mutual exchanges deepen the communications among the people. The contents of the Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation featuring ever-lasting friendship between the two countries have been enriched.

In the future, the Chinese side is willing to join hands with the Nepalese side to continuously consolidate good-neighborly friendship, deepen pragmatic cooperation, strengthen cultural exchanges, and make joint efforts to benefit the two peoples.

Finally, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the friends from the two countries who devote themselves to organizing the China Festival. May the Fifth China Festival a great success!

Thank you.
