Foreign Minister Wang Yi Presides Over the SCO Ad Hoc Meeting of Foreign Ministers
2017/09/21

On September 20, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi presided over the ad hoc Foreign Ministers' meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the UN headquarters in New York.

Wang Yi expressed that since the establishment of the SCO 16 years ago, its member states have upheld the "Shanghai Spirit", and set up a model of the new-type international relations featuring win-win cooperation. The SCO has successfully admitted new members this year, becoming the largest comprehensive regional organization in the modern world. The SCO member states should take the expansion as an opportunity to promote the SCO to play a greater role in safeguarding regional security and stability as well as facilitating common development and prosperity.

Wang Yi noted that the SCO member states should carry forward the tradition of mutual trust, and firmly support each other in maintaining core interests and realizing development and revitalization. We should also strengthen cooperation in security, commit to regional security and stability, and expand people-to-people and cultural and nongovernmental exchanges to help various circles in SCO member states to promote the sense of belonging and sense of identity to the big family of the SCO. The SCO member states should deepen the integration of the "Belt and Road" with the Eurasian Economic Union and development strategies of various countries, form a new pattern of regional integrative development, enhance communication and coordination within the UN framework, actively participate in international and regional affairs, and stick to the principle of openness and transparency and of not targeting at any third parties, so as to constantly expand the circle of friends.

Wang Yi said that as the first SCO rotating presidency after its expansion, the Chinese side will speed up preparations for the SCO summit to be held in China next year. China is willing to, together with various SCO member states, push forward the summit for a complete success, so as to inject new impetus into the constant development of the SCO.

Foreign Ministers present at the meeting welcomed India and Pakistan to join the SCO, and expressed the willingness to uphold the "Shanghai Spirit", strengthen unity, deepen cooperation in politics, economy, security and other fields, and promote the SCO to make greater contributions to promoting regional peace, stability, development and prosperity. Foreign Ministers of various countries all expressed that they will spare no efforts to support China in well hosting the SCO summit next year.
