H.E. Ambassador Li Jinjun Turned over US$ 1 Million for the Victims of the Landslide in Southern Leyte to Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Romulo

On February 20, 2006, H.E. Li Jinjun, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines turned over US$ 250, 000 donation in check of the Chinese Government to Hon. Alberto Romulo, Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and confirmed US$ 750,000 worth of emergency material assistance for the victims of the massive landslide in Southern Leyte.

In his remarks after the turn-over, Secretary Romulo thanked Chinese President Hu Jintao for his sincere and heartfelt message of condolences and the immediate assistance for the victims of the recent landslide in Southern Leyte. He said that China's sustained support demonstrated the traditional friendship between the two countries at the deepest and broadest levels and that with the abiding support of  friends like China in the international community and the determination and unflagging spirit of the Filipino people, the people in the inflicted area will overcome the tragedy.

On behalf of the Chinese Government and people, Ambassador Li once again expressed most sincere sympathy and cordial solicitude to the people of the inflicted area and deepest condolences to the victims and their families. He said that Chinese president Hu Jintao sent a letter of condolences to President Arroyo immediately after learning the disaster, and the next day, the Chinese Government decided to donate one million US dollars, including US$ 250,000 in cash and US $ 750,000 worth of material goods to the Philippines to assist the rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Shortly after the landslide, Mr. Cui Luosheng, Chinese Consul General to Cebu visited the villages hit by landslide in Southern Leyte. Nine engineering personnel and 2 of their family members from the Chinese Road and Bridge Corporation, engaging in contracting projects in the area, joined the rescue operations. They played important role in repairing the damaged road and bridges. Ambassador Li sincerely hoped that the people in the inflicted area would overcome the difficulties brought by the disaster with the support of the Philippine Government and people as well as that of the international community.
