Wang Yi Talks about Korean Peninsula Nuclear Issue: Call on the DPRK to Respond to "Four Nos" Promise of the US
2017/08/08

On the morning of August 7, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi talked about the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue during the 7th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila, the Philippines.

Wang Yi said that regarding the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s violation of the UN Security Council resolution with its continuous launches of ballistic missiles, China showed its objection along with the international community, and adopted the new resolution 2371 with other member states of the UN Security Council. In consideration of the traditional economic bond between China and the DPRK, China is the major party that implements the resolution and pays the price. However, in order to safeguard the international nuclear non-proliferation system and the regional peace and stability, China will always, comprehensively and strictly implement all the contents related to the resolution.

Apart from the sanction measures, the new Security Council resolution 2371 also explicitly stipulates that the six-party talks should be resumed, and insists that the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue must be resolved peacefully through political and diplomatic ways, especially to prevent the tension from further escalating. These important contents include the commitments jointly made by the 15 member states of the UN Security Council including China, Russia and the US, which should also be promoted, practiced and implemented. To this end, China actively explores how to resume the six-party talks while implementing the sanction measures of the resolution. This July, China and Russia released a joint statement, and proposed a roadmap for resuming the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. The first step is the "suspension for suspension" proposal, which means that the DPRK should suspend all the nuclear missile development activities, while the US and the Republic of Korea should suspend the large-scale joint military exercises. The "suspension for suspension" proposal aims at addressing the most urgent security concern at present, which is conducive to finding the effective way to resume the six-party talks. After the proposal was put forward, it has won understandings and supports from more and more countries. China also hopes to gain understandings and supports from other parties of the six-party.

Wang Yi stressed that the core of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is security problem. China fully affirms the "Four Nos" promise of the US to the DPRK reiterated by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on August 1. China regards it as a positive signal, hoping the DPRK to respond to it.
