Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Liu Weimin's Remarks on Japan's Information Release on the Okinotori Reef
2012-04-28

Q: Japan released information recently that the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf approved Japan's claim of outer continental shelf based on the Okinotori Reef. How does China comment?

A: At present, the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf has not made public the results of handling Japan's application for the delimitation of its outer continental shelf. I have no idea on what basis Japan is saying so. However, the mainstream view among the international community is not supportive of Japan's claim. China's position on the Okinotori Reef is consistent that the Okinotori Reef should have neither exclusive economic zones nor continental shelf according to international law.
