Latest Developments of Wenchuan Earthquake Relief

Released by the Information Office of the State Council on 2 June 2008 (21st day after magnitude-8.0 Wenchuan earthquake) with the authorization of the State Council Earthquake Relief Headquarters

According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of midday Monday, June 2nd,
- The confirmed death toll of Wenchuan earthquake had risen to 69,019, with 373,573 injured and 18,627 missing. 45,552,965 people were affected by the 8.0-magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks, and 15,147,400 had been relocated.
- Donations from home and abroad to China's quake-hit areas had reached 41.742 billion yuan (6 billion U.S. dollars), with 37.727 billion yuan (US$5.42 billion) of cash (31.947 billion yuan) and materials (worth 5.78 billion yuan) in place and 11.531 billion yuan (US$1.65 billion) in cash and relief materials forwarded to the earthquake-affected areas.
- Some 712,900 tents, 4.4112 million quilts, 11.5382 million items of clothing as well as 650,000 tonnes of fuel oil and 1.35 million tonnes of coal had been transported and delivered to the quake-affected areas.
- Over 23.24 million houses had been damaged by the powerful earthquake and its aftershocks, and 7 million houses had collapsed.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction, as of Sunday June 1st, 11,500 temporary homes had been set up in the quake zone and 8,300 were being set up, with 36,800 awaiting installation, 35,400 being transported and 45,800 to be transported from places of their manufacturers.
According to the PLA General Staff Headquarters, as of Sunday (June 1st) midnight, disaster relief workers had managed to rescue and relocate 1,052,656 people to safe areas.
According to the Ministry of Health, as of 12:00 noon June 2nd, hospitals had treated a total of 92,973 people injured in the earthquake, of whom 68,565 had been treated and discharged, while 11,832 remained hospitalized. 10,015 had been transferred from Sichuan to other parts of China for further treatment. A total of 583,891 injured people in the quake zone had received medical treatment.

According to the Ministry of Finance, as of midday Monday, June 2nd, the government disaster relief fund for quake-stricken areas had reached 23.033 billion yuan (3.31 billion U.S. dollars). The fund included 18.68 billion yuan from the central budget and 4.353 billion yuan from the local budget.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, as of 4:00 p.m. June 1st, the Ministry had delivered to quake-affected areas 252 mobile stores (vehicles), all of which had been put into operation. The Ministry had also provided 805 tents (for setting up temporary stores), and 176 of these tent stores had been opened for business.
According to China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), as of Monday morning, June 2nd, 98.8% of the banking service offices in the quake-hit areas have resumed operation, with 159 offices' operation still suspended.
