Chinese Consul General Pan Xinchun Visited Orkney

At the invitation of Orkney Islands Council, Chinese Consul General Pan Xinchun paid an official visit to Orkney from 30 November to 1 December. During the visit, Consul General Pan had a cordial meeting with the Convener Steven Heddle, Chief Executive Alistair Buchan, councilors and representatives of the local business, delivered a speech on the recent development of China, relations between China and the UK and China-Scotland relations.

 

Convener Steven warmly welcomed the Consul General and briefed him on the development of Orkney. He drove to show the Consul General around Kirkwall, capital of Orkney Islands. Jan Falconer, Strategic Projects Director and Brian Archibald, Head of Marine Services, Engineering and Transportation gave presentations to the Consul General on Orkney's economy, tourism, and marine transportation.

Consul General Pan expressed his sincere thanks to the Council for the cordial invitation and thoughtful arrangement, wishing to  gain deeper mutual understanding and further strengthen the links as well as to seek more opportunities for cooperation between China and Orkney through the visit. In his presentation, Consul General Pan indicated recent achievements and bright future of the development of China as well as the fruitful results in China-UK relations and the cooperation between China and Scotland, receiving a warm welcome by the attendees who expressed strong willingness to strengthen cooperation with China by asking questions around local exchanges, investment, trade, tourism, Chinese language education, social media and impact on Brexit, etc.

 

During the visit, Consul General Pan had a tour of European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC). Stuart Baird, Operations Director of the EMEC briefed the Consul General on the development of wave and tidal power test and research. He said that the Centre's relevant technologies are at the forefront of the world, and have been put into commercial use. EMEC has set up partnership with 9 countries including China. A delegation will visit China soon to deepen cooperation.
