Spokesperson on the first report on evaluating the implementation of its China policy by the European Commission

2000/11/15

Q: The European Commission published on September 8 the first report on evaluating the implementation of its China policy, advocating further increased dialogue and cooperation between China and EU. What is the comment of the Chinese side?

A: We have taken note that the European Commission recently published a report that reviews and evaluates China-EU relations and the cooperation in various fields since 1998 and makes some recommendations. The report advocates further strengthening of dialogue and deepening of cooperation between EU and China. China welcomes that. In recent years, thanks to the joint efforts of the two sides, there has been a good momentum of development of relations between China and EU. The leaders of the two sides have held frequent meetings. Fruitful results have been achieved in political dialogue and consultation. Exchanges and cooperation in economic, trade, scientific and technological fields have further expanded. China attaches great importance to its relations with EU and pays attention to the continuously growing standing and role of EU in the world. It is China's consistent belief that the multipolarization and economic globalization process in today's world is developing very fast. The establishment and development of constructive partnership between China and EU serves the shared long-term interests of the two sides and is also conducive to world peace and stability. China is willing to further promote, on the basis of mutual respect, seeking common ground and reserving differences, equality and mutual benefit, the development of constructive partnership between China and EU in an enduring, healthy and stable manner.
