Hu Jintao Meets with Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael

On the afternoon of November 21, 2004, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare in Santiago.

Hu said that in recent years, China-Papua New Guinea ties have developed smoothly. Somare's visit this February scores positive results and the Joint Press Communiqué issued by both sides establishes a framework for continuously expanding and deepening bilateral friendly cooperation in various fields in the new century. Currently, bilateral economic and trade ties maintain strong growth, the cooperation in culture, education, health and agriculture is continuously expanding and both sides conduct sound coordination in international and regional organizations. Since both of us are developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, we can learn from each other in developing economy and improving people's livelihood. Both sides enjoy huge potentials in strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation. China will continue to offer Papua New Guinea assistance within its available resources. As a token of support for Papua New Guinea's efforts to prevent and cure AIDS, China decides to provide related drugs and medical equipments worth 5 million RMB yuan.

Somare said that the agreement on economic and trade cooperation he signed during his visit to China this year fully embodies bilateral friendly ties. His country appreciates and thanks China for offering precious support and assistance over the years, which is beneficial to the development of economic and social undertakings of Papua New Guinea. China has gained good benefits in the economic and technological cooperation projects on agriculture, fishery and mining, among which the wheat cultivation technology introduces a new kind of crop to Papua New Guinea. His country welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest and prosper business there and keep expanding areas for investment cooperation. Somare also emphasized that the government of Papua New Guinea adheres to the one-China policy.
