Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi Holds Pre-Meeting Consultations with Delegations from the United States, the DPRK, the ROK and Japan Respectively

On February 24th 2004, Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi held pre-meeting consultations respectively with Head of Delegation and Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly of the US, Head of Delegation and Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan of the DPRK, Head of Delegation and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Lee Soo-hyuck of the ROK and Head of Delegation and Director-General of the Asian and Oceania Affairs Bureau of Foreign Ministry Mitoji Yabunaka of Japan, who were here to attend the second round of the six-party talks in Beijing.

Wang Yi discussed major issues involved in the talks with the abovementioned parties and briefed them on Chinese efforts to promote peace and prepare for the talks. He stressed that the second round of talks will begin to discuss substantive issues and urged the parties involved to respect each other and work toward the same orientation to make sure that the talks can witness progress regardless of the many difficulties. Kelly indicated that the United States remains committed to the peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue and is willing to seek common grounds and exert patience during the talks. Kim Kye-gwan said that the DPRK has come to solve problems and is willing to show flexibility during the talks so that this round of talks can yield concrete results. Lee Soo-hyuck and Mitoji Yabunaka also expressed willingness to enhance communication and coordination with other parties positively so as to ensure the success of the talks.
