Vice President Hu Jintao Met with Malaysian Supreme Head of State

On April 24, 2002, Malaysian Supreme Head of State Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and his wife met with Vice President Hu Jintao and his wife Liu Yongqing at the Royal Palace. The two sides held friendly talks.
Sirajuddin said that there is a long history of friendly exchanges between Malaysia and China. Bilateral exchanges and cooperation have scored great progress in all fields recently. Malaysia admires China's achievements in economic development and its foreign policy of peace. He hoped both sides can take more concrete measures to strengthen mutual understanding, the traditional friendship and the mutual beneficial cooperation of the people of the two countries. Hu Jintao conveyed best regards from President Jiang Zemin and his wife to Sirajuddin and his wife, and extended warm congratulations to Sirajuddin, who will ascend the throne on April 25, on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people. Hu expressed admiration of Malaysia's efforts to stick to a road that suits its national conditions, which has brought in an all-round economic and social development and its ability to overcome the difficulties resulted from the Asian financial crisis in a short time. He also wished Malaysia could reach its development goal in 2020. Hu said that bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Malaysia established diplomatic relations. Especially in the past decade, the two countries have maintained high-level mutual visits and contacts, and enhanced mutual understanding and trust, which has laid a sound political foundation for bilateral friendly relations and cooperation. The two countries achieved remarkable results in their economic cooperation and trade. Exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education, science and technology and tourism. The two countries have conducted effective coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs, which has brought concrete interests to the people of the two countries and contributed to peace, stability and development in Asia and the world. We are satisfied with the momentum of sound development of China-Malaysia relations. Hu emphasized that China upholds an independent foreign policy of peace and stands for that countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor,are all equal members of the international community. It is China's set policy to develop all-round relations with Malaysia. Chinese government is willing to join hands with the Malaysian government to push forward the bilateral relations.
