On April 27, 2002, Vice President Hu Jintao met with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the hotel he stayed.
Hu said that during his current visit, he had in-depth exchange of views with Singaporean leaders on how to further develop China-Singapore relations and some major regional and international issues. Though the visit is brief, it has yielded substantial outcome and has increased his confidence in the prospect of future cooperation between China and Singapore. The two leaders talked about exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science and technology and human resources development. Hu said that revolutionary scientific and technological breakthroughs are taking place in today's world and a country's vitality and vigorousness lie in its efforts to keep pace with the times and make full use of every opportunity available to achieve scientific and technological progress and give full play to innovations. Science and technology are among the most promising fields for Sino-Singaporean cooperation. He expressed his hope that the two countries will strengthen their exchange and cooperation by complementing each other and giving a boost to scientific and technological progress and innovations. Hu pointed out that talents are essential in achieving scientific and technological progress and innovations. China is willing to further strengthen exchange and cooperation with Singapore in this field. Lee said that the Singapore government fully agrees with and pays attention to Hu's proposal on enhancing cooperation in science and technology, human resources development and the development of the western part of China, and will designate government agencies to cooperate with the Chinese side for the implementation of the proposal.
