On the morning of June 4, 2002, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, who is accompanying President Jiang in the summit meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, met with his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov. The two sides exchanged in-depth opinions on the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in various fields. They reached consensus that the upcoming meetings between the two state leaders and other high-ranking officials later this year are of great significance to the implementation of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation Between the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation and the deepening of bilateral cooperation. Both sides said they will make active arrangements and ensure concrete results.

The two sides also exchanged opinions on the summit meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, Shanghai Organization Summit, Indian-Pakistani situation and other internaitonal and regional issues of common concern. They pointed out that both countries share the interests in maintaining peace and stability in South Asia, adopt identical opinions and stands on related issues, and will continue to make joint efforts to alleviate the situation.
