President Jiang Zemin Met with Chairman of Afghan Interim Administration Hamid Karzai

On the morning of June 5, 2002, President Jiang Zemin met with Hamid Karzai, Chairman of Afghan Interim Administration.

In view of the traditional good-neighborly and friendly relations of coorperation between China and Afghanistan, Jiang said that the two peoples have maintained friendly exchanges from long time ago and there is no unsettled issues between the two countries. China is willing to actively develop the good-neighborly and friendly relations of coorperation with Afghanistan on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

Karzai expressed his great thanks for the friendly support and selfless aids the Chinese government and people extended to Afghanistan. He said that the Afghan Interim Administration has just passed a law on foreign investment, and Afghanistan welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest and set up factories in Afghanistan.

Karzai briefed Jiang on the political situation in Afghanistan, especially the arrangement of the Loya Jirga to be convened five days later. He believes that Afghanistan has a bright future. Jiang pointed out that the peace process of Afghanistan is heading in the right direction. The Chinese side sincerely wishes the Loya Jirga a success and hopes that Afghanistan can form a broadly-based transitional government representing the interests of various parties in Afghanistan on the basis of full consultation. Jiang believes the Afghan undertakings in various fields will make further progress after the Loya Jirga.
