Premier Zhu Rongji Met with Egyptian Leaders

On the morning of April 21, 2002, Premier Zhu Rongji met separately with Speaker of the Egyptian People's Assembly Ahmed Fathi Sorour and Speaker of the Egyptian Advisory Council Mustapha Kamal Helmi in Cairo.
Zhu first conveyed greetings from Chairman Li Peng of National People's Congress and Chairman Li Ruihuan of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference to Sorour and Helmi. Zhu said that since the esatblishment of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt, Sino-Egyptian friendly cooperation in various areas has been progressing and areas of mutually beneficial cooperation have been expanded and enriched. Exchanges between the Chinese National People's Congress and the Egyptian People's Assembly as well as between the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Egyptian Advisory Council play an important role in promoting friendship and cooperation between the two countries. Zhu reached broad consensus with Egyptian leaders during his current visit. The two sides agreed on a series of measures to further promote their cooperation in economic, scientific, technological and other areas. China and Egypt, both developing countries, are facing common tasks and challenges, and they can work together in terms of economic growth and social development. Sorour said that the two countries, both ancient civilizations, have made a major contribution to the development of mankind. The two countries have had very good cooperation in all fields since they established diplomatic relations. Egypt and China share identical views on many regional and international issues. The Chinese people are sincere friends of the Egyptian people. Egypt hopes for increased cooperation with China. Helmi briefed Zhu on Egypt's economic reform, the development of the democratic system, and Egypt's Advisory Council. He said that Egypt admires the achievements China has scored in political, economic and social areas in line with its own characteristics. He said that the Egyptian people will not forget the Chinese people's long-standing support. The two Egyptian leaders asked Zhu to convey their greetings to Chairman Li Peng and Li Ruihuan.
