Premier Zhu Rongji Held Talks with Kenyan President

On the morning of April 24, 2002, Premier Zhu Rongji held talks with Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi at the state palace in Kenya. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common concern.

Zhu said that China and Kenya have a long and traditional friendship. Since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1963, especially since Moi came to presidency in 1978, with direct care and great efforts of the top leaders of the two countries, China-Kenya friendly relations and cooperation have been consolidated and developed. Political exchanges between the two countries have been frequent and cooperation in all areas expanding. The two countries have supported and cooperated closely with each other in international affairs. China appreciates that the Kenyan government has long supported the One China policy and China's just position on human rights issues. The Chinese side believeds that the two sides will continue to maintain good cooperation in international affairs. The Chinese government and people are ready to further consolidate and strengthen bilateral friendly cooperation in all areas.

Zhu said that economic relations and trade are an important part of bilateral relations. The two countries have conducted productive cooperation in economic and technical cooperation for a long time. China provided support to Kenya's infrastructure construction, which was an important part of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. In the future, China would like to further develop with Kenya cooperation in telecommunications, road construction, and personnel training. China attaches great importance to the existing trade deficit on the Kenyan side in bilateral trade, and will take measure to expand import from Kenya.

Moi warmly welcomed Zhu for his visit to Kenya. He said that there is profound friendship between the Kenyan and Chinese people. Zhu's visit will further strengthen friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries. Moi said that China is an important cooperative partner of Kenya's. The Chinese government and people have provided precious support for Kenya's economic and social development and played an important role in Kenya's development. Kenya deeply appreciates that. Moi reaffirmed that the Kenyan government supports the One China policy. He also appreciates the close cooperation between Kenya and China in international affairs.

On the situation in Africa, Moi said that at present, conflicts in Africa are constant, which waste limited resources and impede Africa's development. African countries are striving to solve the regional conflicts, and hope China can play a bigger role in preventing and solving regional conflicts in Africa.

Zhu said that the Chinese government has always attached great importance to friendly relations and cooperation with African countries and has been conscientiously implementing the promises made at the 2000 ministerial meeting of China-Africa Cooperation Forum. China will make further efforts in debt reduction, personnel training and encouragement of investment.

On the situation in Africa, Zhu said that the Chinese government supports the efforts by African countries in promoting the cause of peace and development on the African continent, and appreciates the active role by the Kenyan government in promoting peaceful settlement of conflicts and realization of regional stability.

After the talks, the two sides signed several documents on agricultural and economy cooperation. Zhu and Moi attended the signing ceremony.
