Written Statement by H.E. President Jiang Zemin Of the People's Republic of China At Abuja International Airport of Nigeria

14 April 2002

2002/04/15

At the invitation of H.E. President Olusegun Obasanjo, I am delighted to pay a state visit to Nigeria, a beautiful country. I would like to take this opportunity to extend to the people of Nigeria the cordial greetings and best wishes of the Chinese people.

Though China and Nigeria are far apart geographically, the hearts of our two peoples are linked closely. We are satisfied that in the past 31 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, our two countries have conducted sincere, friendly and fruitful cooperation in the political, economic and trade, cultural, educational and many other areas. I am confident that with the common efforts of our two sides, Sino-Nigerian friendly relations and cooperation will enjoy an even broader prospect in development.

The long history and colorful cultures of Nigeria have nurtured its industrious and talented people. With this visit, I am looking forward to feeling for myself the ancient cultures and modern achievements of Nigeria, and having in-depth exchange of views with the leaders of your countries on our bilateral relations and on international and regional issues of common interest. I believe that my visit will further promote our mutual understanding, enhance the friendship, expand the consensus, strengthen the cooperation and push forward the relationship of our two countries.
