Premier Zhu Rongji Met with Cambodian Senate President and President of National Assembly

On November 3, 2002, Premier Zhu Rongji met with Chea Sim, President of Cambodia's Senate, and Norodom Ranarith, President of Cambodian National Assembly, on separate occasions in Phnom Penh.

Zhu first conveyed to Chea Sim and Norodom Ranarith cordial greetings from Chairman Li Peng of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. He said that we are happy to note that in the new age of peaceful construction in Cambodia, the two major ruling parties work together to maintain political stability and achieve economic development. We profoundly believe that the Cambodian people can overcome the challenges on the road ahead to make the country prosperous, rich and strong. In the process of realizing national reconciliation and economic development in Cambodia, China, as a sincere friend of the Cambodian people, will continue to provide assistance to Cambodia within its capacity.

Zhu said that he had warm, friendly and fruitful talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen on the previous day, reached a lot of consensus and signed a number of agreements. The Chinese government values its traditional friendship with Cambodia, and will continue to develop more solid and closer bilateral friendly relations and cooperation.

Zhu said that the Chinese side attaches importance to exchanges between the two parliaments and will conduct all forms of cooperation with Cambodia.

Zhu also appreciated the Cambodian Senate and the National Assembly for their adherence to the One China policy.

Chea Sim and Norodom Ranarith said that Zhu's visit to Cambodia is of great significance and will further promote the constant development of Cambodia-China traditional and friendly relations and cooepration in the new century. The Chinese government and people have made precious contributions to the political settlement of the Cambodian issue, national reconciliation and economic recovery and development in the past years. Today's good situation of peace and development in Cambodia can be attributed to the selfless assistance and support of the Chinese people. The Senate and National Assembly are satisfied with the rich fruits of Zhu's current visit to Cambodia and highly appreciate the Chinese government's decision to write off all the Cambodian debts to China that have matured. This fully shows the friendly feelings of the Chinese government and people to the Cambodian people. Both the Cambodian Senate and the National Assembly attach great importance to strengthening exchanges and contacts with the Chinese National People's Congress and are ready to do so to jointly promote the development of Cambodia-China relations.

Chea Sim and Norodom Ranarith both said that the Cambodian Senate and National Assembly would unswervingly stick to the One China policy.

Chea Sim and Norodom Ranarith asked Zhu to convey their cordial greetings to Chairman Li Peng of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
