Premier Zhu Rongji Meets Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen

Premier Zhu Rongji met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Nov. 25, 2000.

Zhu said that during a recent historic visit to Cambodia, President Jiang Zemin reached extensive consensus with Cambodian leaders on strengthening the bilateral traditional ties of good-neighborliness and friendship. He noted that China is willing to join hands with Cambodia in implementing the joint statement signed and published by the two sides, adding that China is willing to work with Cambodia to strengthen their friendly cooperation in all fields.

He also conveyed President Jiang's concern about the serious floods that have stricken Cambodia this year, and promised that,

In addition to the emergency aid China has provided, the Chinese government has decided to increase 5 million RMB aid to Cambodia as a token of Chinese people's goodwill.

Zhu said that at the just-concluded summit between ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea (10+3), which is a full success, he and Hun Sen held useful discussions about furthering East Asia cooperation. During the meeting, it is unanimously agreed that a lot of work remains to be done within the framework of 10+3. The meeting believed that rich countries should help poor ones and developed countries should help developing ones and assistance should be mutual and reciprocal. Such assistance will help to advance the mutually beneficial cooperation in East Asia and to achieve common development.

Zhu went on to say that China always attaches importance to strengthening economic and trade cooperation between China and Cambodia, and actively supports Cambodia's economic reconstruction. He added that China is to provide assistance to Cambodia as its capacity allows and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest and establish factories there.

Hun Sen said that President Jiang's successful visit to Cambodia, is a milestone in Cambodian-Chinese relations. It will greatly push forward the development of bilateral relations. He noted that the joint statement signed by the two countries during the visit would provide guidance to the further development of Cambodian-Chinese relations in the new century. He added that with the end of a long period of turmoil, Cambodia now faces good opportunities in its national economic development. He said that Cambodia is willing to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation with China in various fields. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for China's unselfish assistance to Cambodia in the past years.
