The Russian Foreign Ministry Issues a Formal Statement on the Adoption of the Anti-Secession Law by China's National People's Congress

2005/03/14

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a formal statement on the adoption of the Anti-Secession Law by China's National People's Congress (NPC).

The statement says China's NPC adopted the Anti-Secession Law on March 14. Judging from the content, this is a law on the channels and means to solve the Taiwan question With regard to the Taiwan question, Russia sticks to its principled position, believing that there is merely one China in the world and Taiwan is an unalienable part of China. Russia is opposed to Taiwan independence in any form and also to "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".

Russia thinks that the Taiwan issue is China's internal affair and understands the adoption of the law by the NPC. In particular, the law elaborates China's major policy, namely, to reunify the country by peaceful means within the framework of "one country, two systems". China declares it would like to realize the objective with utmost sincerity.

The statement believes that to find a solution to the Taiwan question acceptable to both parties conforms not only to the fundamental interests of the Chinese people across the Taiwan Straits but also to the peace and stability of the Asia Pacific region as a whole.
