As of 10:30 am, December 31, 2004, the death toll caused by the tsunami disaster in Sri Lanka stood at 27,589, 12,482 were injured, 4,832 missing and 889,175 in 228,264 households homeless. 79,100 houses were totally destroyed by the tsunami and 20,685 were partially damaged. At present the government established 781 temporary shelters nationwide holding altogether 280,541 people of 25,374 households.
