After countries in South and Southeast Asia were hit by the earthquake and the tsunami, the government and people of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) are very sympathetic with the people of those countries and are active in making donations in cash or in kind to offer assistance to them. Recently the MSAR government indicated to the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in MSAR that it was planning to send medical workers to the tsunami-hit countries for relief efforts as members of Chinese medical teams. Leaders of the Office of the Commissioner paid great attention to this and immediately reported the case to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, asking for approval. Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing expressed appreciation for the move of the MSAR government and instructed related departments to do a good job in making the arrangements. Ministry of Health of China provided great support in the process by actively coordinating the arrangements and decided to incorporate the MSAR medical workers into the Chinese medical assistance team to Sri Lanka. The three members of the MSAR, Li Shaoping, Li Anding and Li Shuxian, flew to Beijing at noon on January 3, 2005, and are about to depart for the disaster-hit country after uniting with other members of the team. When seeing the three medical workers off at Macao Airport, Commissioner Wan Yongxiang indicated to Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Chui Sai On of the MSAR government and the three medical workers that the dispatching of medical workers by the MSAR as members of the Chinese medical assistance team not only shows the deep sympathy borne by the MSAR government and Macao compatriots to the tsunami-hit countries and their lofty humanitarian spirit but also reflects the support of the MSAR for the central government. Li Shaoping and the other two medical workers are showing great virtue by joining the medical assistance team regardless of the risks, feeling as though they themselves were experiencing the disaster in person. The Commissioner's Office pays high tribute to their righteous act and believes that they will surely be able to accomplish the tasks successfully with other members of the team and come back with great honor.
