Summary Report on the Tsunami Disaster on January 8 in India

According to the official statistics of India, by 10:00 a.m. of January 6, the tsunami has caused 9,995 deaths and 5,689 missing in India. The death toll in the worst hit Tamil Nadu state has reached 7,941. There have occurred 115 aftershocks above 5 degree on the Richter scale since the tsunami. Up to now, over 642,000 persons have been transferred to safe areas. The Indian government has set up 630 makeshift shelters for about 380,000 refugees.
