Summary Report on the Tsunami Disaster in India as of January 9

According to Indian official statistics, as of 10:00 am, January 8, 2005, the death toll from the tsunami disaster in India has reached 10,012 with 5,624 missing of whom 5,531 were on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Since the outbreak of tsunami, the disaster-affected areas of India have suffered 117 aftershocks registering above 5 on the Richter scale, including 105 aftershocks between 5 and 6 on the Richter scale. The tsunami hit the areas along the 2,260 kilometers of coastal line of India. In addition to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a total number of 150,000 houses were destroyed and the normal life of 3.61 million people affected, with the economic loss totaling 53.2 billion Rupees (about US$1.18 billion). Up to now, the Indian government has evacuated about 645,000 people to safe places. In the Tamil Nadu state that is hardest hit, 412 makeshift shelters were built to hold about 310,000 refugees. About 4,700 tons of relief supplies have been delivered to the disaster-struck areas. The Indian government declares that it will appropriate another 2 billion Rupees (about US$40 million) to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for the reconstruction efforts in the wake of the disaster.
