Summary Report on the Tsunami Disaster in India as of January 10

According to Indian official statistics, as of 10:00 am, January 9, 2005, the death toll from the tsunami disaster in India has risen to 10,022 with 5,624 missing and that of the worst hit Tamil Nadu state reached 7,951. Since the outbreak of tsunami 119 aftershocks registering above 5 on the Richter scale in the disaster-struck areas of India have occurred, but no aftershock with a magnitude of above 6 on the Richter scale has ever happened since January 4, 2005. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh toured the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on January 8 and told local residents that all measures possible will be taken to reconstruct the region after the disaster. Next day Prime Minister Singh hosted a conference attended by all the political parties of India, discussing the assistance and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the disaster. The conference decided that the Indian government would establish a "National Disaster Administration" and a disaster early warning system. Up to now, the local government of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has moved more than 36,000 refugees to the 123 makeshift shelters on 8 islands. The refugees now have access to food, drinking water and medical treatment, and part of the electricity and communication services have been restored. The Indian government has delivered about 2,801 tons of relief supplies to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. On January 9, Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that most of the 5,624 missing residents on the Islands might have died. The death toll from the tsunami disaster throughout India will possibly rise to about 15,000.
