On the afternoon of January 3, 2005, Ambassador Guo Chongli organized an emergent meeting to call on the entire staffs in the embassy and the Chinese agencies in Kenya to donate money for the Kenyans victimized by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The entire staffs of the embassy and heads of Permanent Representative Office of China to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Permanent Representative Office of China to United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), Head Office of Xinhua News Agency in Africa, and Reporters' Station of China Radio International (CRI) in Nairobi were present at the meeting. Ambassador Guo first introduced the latest casualties caused by the tsunami of the Indian Ocean, and notified the latest progress the Chinese government has made in the donation for tsunami-stricken countries. He stressed that the Chinese leadership were deeply concerned over and sympathized with the people in those countries and decided not only to provide large amount of relief goods and foreign exchange in cash and dispatch the rescue teams, but also to call upon the people throughout the country to donate money to the people of the victimized countries. To that end, the leaders in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the staffs in related ministries even worked on holidays. Their devotion to the relief work paid off and they set good examples for us. Ambassador Guo said that Kenya was one of the countries hit by the tsunami. As the Chinese working in Kenya, we should hold out our hands to assist the victims in Kenya in response to the call of our government. Our assistance will not only help the victims overcome the difficulties, but also be conducive to consolidating the foundation of China-Kenya relations. Before concluding the meeting, Ambassador Guo took the lead in donating money and leaders and individuals in different departments followed suit to help the Kenyan victims in concrete deeds, with the donation reaching 100,00 Kenya shilling on the spot.
