According to Indian official statistics, as of 6:00 pm, January 4, 2005, the death toll from the tsunami disaster in India has reached 9,575 with 5,918 missing. The Tamil Nadu state, which was hardest hit, suffered a loss of 7,890 lives, and on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands 5,801 people remain missing.

Since the outbreak of the tsunami, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have stood 97 aftershocks of above 5 Richter scale. Two islets south of the Islands are inundated, and the famous lighthouse at the south end of India is also covered by water, with all the staffs there swept away by gigantic waves.
