Chinese emergency relief supplies arrived in Thailand by aircraft at noon of January 4, 2005, which are the second batch of assistance by the Chinese government following China's US$300,000 relief donation to Thailand and made up of 28 categories including drugs, food, daily necessity, generators and communication equipment, weighing 50 tons altogether and valuing RMB7.5 million (about US$905,000). Ambassador Zhang Jiuhuan, Counselor Xuan Guoxing and Counselor Wu Jun received the supplies at the airport, and Ambassador Zhang, on behalf of the Chinese government, handed them over to Deputy Under-Secretary of the Thai Foreign Ministry. The devastating tsunamis caused heavy losses of life and property suffered by the Thai people and touched the Chinese government and people deeply who feel great concern and sympathy, according to Zhang. He expressed hope that China's assistance can help alleviate the pains and hardship inflicted by the disaster, facilitate the relief efforts of the Thai government and enable the Thai people to restore normal life and production order and rebuild their homeland. Deputy Under-Secretary said that following the outbreak of the unexpected catastrophe, Chinese leaders were the first to send messages of condolence to Thailand and the Chinese government donated money and materials at the first time, which well demonstrates the close relationship of "members of the same family" between the two countries. The Thai government is very grateful for the timely and valuable care and help offered by the Chinese government and will deliver the supplies to areas hit by the disaster for relief efforts as soon as possible.
