Summary Report on the Tsunami Disaster on January 7, 2005 in India

According to the official statistics of India, the death toll from the tsunami has reached 9,691 and 6,011 are still missing by 4:00 p.m. of January 6, among which the death toll in the worst hit Tamil Nadu State has reached 7,932. There have been 113 aftershocks above 5 degree on the Richter scale and 12 aftershocks above 6 degree on the Richter scale taking place in the disaster-hit areas of India since the tsunami. Up to now, over 638,000 persons have been transferred to safe areas. The tsunami has led to a loss about US$ 1,740,000,000 in the Indian disaster-struck areas.
