Summary Report of Indian Tsunami Disaster on January 13

According to the official statistics of India, as of 12:00 a.m. January 12, the death toll from the tsunami disaster in India has reached 10,327 with 5,628 missing. On the Andaman & Nicobar Islands there are 5,542 people missing of whom most might have died. 16% of the total population of the Nicobar Islands might have deceased. Since the outbreak of tsunami, 125 aftershocks of above 5 degree on the Richter scale have occurred. The current relief focus of the Indian government is on providing makeshift shelters and job opportunities for the displaced and restoring the infrastructure and normal life in the disaster-struck areas.

On January 11, according to the World Bank, the Indian government has formally applied to the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for financial assistance to help with its reconstruction of infrastructure and the restoration of normal life for the victimized people. The World Bank also said that India hopes to get help from the two banks to develop a disaster prevention and management system. The Indian government has dispatched 2 research ships to the disaster-hit areas for landform and ecological change studies, with the final research results to be released by the end of this month. On January 12, the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs set up a 5-member committee to formulate a bill on the establishment of National Disaster Administration as soon as possible. The bill will be submitted to the budget conference of the Indian Parliament next month.
