Summary Report of Indian Tsunami Disaster on January 17

According to the official statistics of India, as of 12:00 a.m. January 15, the death toll from the tsunami disaster in India has reached 10,714 with 5, 669 missing. On the Andaman & Nicobar Islands there are 5, 583 people missing of whom most might have died. Since the outbreak of tsunami, 131 aftershocks of above 5 degree on the Richter scale have occurred.

Up to now the first-phase of rescue and relief efforts have completed, and the remains of the victims in the disaster-hit areas have been disposed properly. The government has delivered about 14,000 tents to those areas of which about 12,000 were sent to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. As of January 13, about 46,000 pieces of galvanized steel sheet have been sent to those areas to build makeshift shelters. The governments of disaster-struck states are making best efforts to restore the normal life of local residents. The refugee camps of Andhra Pradesh state have been closed and the refugees have returned home. With medical teams dispatched by the government to those camps, the health conditions, drugs, food and drinking water are guaranteed. At present there has yet not any report on the outbreak of large-scale epidemics. The Indian government dispatched 7,000 plus relief supplies to the disaster-affected areas of which about 5,000 were sent to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
