Asian-African Summit Opens in Jakarta Leaders and Delegates from over 100 Countries Attend the Summit

On the morning of April 22, the 2005 Asian-African Summit opened in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia. The summit would discuss how should the Asian and African countries carry forward the Bandung Spirit and establish a new type of Asian-African strategic partnership.

Chinese President Hu Jintao and the leaders or delegates from over 100 countries attend the summit.

With the theme of "Reinvigorating the Bandung Spirit: Working Towards a New Asian-African Strategic Partnership", the summit will sign the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership Declaration and issue the Joint Asian-African Leaders' Statement on Tsunami, Earthquake and other Natural Disasters. As a grand event of the Asian-African leaders, the summit is of great importance to promoting the solidarity and cooperation among Asian and African countries and the peace and development in the two continents.

The Asian-Africa Conference was initiated in Bandung from April 18 to 24, 1955, which was attended by delegates from 29 Asian and African countries and regions. It is the first international conference hosted spontaneously by Asian and African countries to discuss major issues related with them in the history. The Bandung spirit demonstrated at and the ten principles of addressing relations among countries set by the conference have made historic contributions to promoting the solidarity and cooperation between Asian and African countries.
