Hu Jintao Meets with Algerian President Bouteflika

2005/04/23

On the afternoon of April 22, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Algerian President Bouteflika in Jakarta. Both sides held friendly talks on issues of common concern including how to further develop the China- Algeria relations and jointly push forward South-South cooperation.

Talking abut bilateral ties, Hu told Bouteflika that China and Algeria enjoy profound traditional friendship and have been always trusting and treating each other sincerely no matter how the international and domestic situations change. Since the establishment of strategic partnership between the two countries last year, the bilateral friendly cooperation in politics, economy and trade, energy development, infrastructure construction and other fields has gained greater development. In international affairs, the two countries have also conducted sound coordination and collaboration in protecting the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. Hu stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to pushing forward the strategic partnership with Algeria, expects to discuss with Algeria the new channels, ways and areas of expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation and supports the Algerian government in realizing its economic and social development objectives.

Bouteflika made high remarks on the traditional Algeria-China friendly relations and reaffirmed that the Algerian government firmly supports the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan question and efforts to realize national reunification at the earliest date possible. He also noted that the Chinese businesses enjoy good reputation in Algeria. The Algerian government has formulated new economic development plans and welcomes the Chinese businesses to play an active part in Algeria's economic construction in a bid to expand Algeria-China mutually beneficial cooperation.

Concerning China's relations with African and Arab countries and the South-South cooperation, Hu pointed out that over years China and African countries have been supporting and helping each other and developed close partnership. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation has conducted fruitful work. The establishment of the Forum on Cooperation between China and Arab Countries at the beginning of last year builds a new platform for the collective dialogue and cooperation between the two sides and raises China-Arab relations to a new level. Hu said that as the economic globalization goes deeper the North-South gap keeps widening and the developing countries face increasingly grave challenges. China will always be a member of the developing countries and takes strengthening cooperation with developing countries as the cornerstone of its foreign policy. We stand ready to work with the Arab side to carry forward the Bandung Spirit and promote South-South cooperation.

Bouteflika agreed with Hu's opinion that the economic globalization brings about grave challenges to the developing countries and compliments China's contribution to maintaining the rights and interests of developing countries. He said that South-South cooperation has never had any political conditions attached and remains to be the primary policy choice of the Algerian government. China is experiencing rapid economic and social development and the Africa-China cooperation has achieved fruitful results. Currently holding the rotating presidency of the League of Arab States, Algeria will actively promote the all-round progress of Arab-China cooperation under new situations.
