On the afternoon of April 22, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Pakistani President Musharraf in Jakarta. Both sides held friendly and cordial talks.
Hu told Musharraf that 50 years ago as the sponsor country of the Asian-African conference Pakistan made great contributions to the success of the conference and the adoption of the ten Bandung principles. It is of great significance for us to meet today to discuss how to further push forward China-Pakistan strategic partnership and strengthen the solidarity and cooperation between Asian and African countries.
Hu said that during President Musharraf's visit to China at the end of 2003 both sides issued a joint declaration, deciding to deepen and expand the all-round partnership between China and Pakistan. The China-Pakistan Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, the first treaty of its kind between China and South Asian countries, signed during Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Pakistan not long ago confirmed the aspiration of the two peoples to maintain friendship from generation to generation in the legal form. China is willing to work with Pakistan to adopt tangible measures to constantly enrich the connotation of bilateral ties and build a closer strategic partnership between the two countries.
Musharraf said that the recent visit of Premier Wen Jiabao to Pakistan was a huge success and both sides reached agreements on all the issues of common concern. To maintain and move ahead the friendly cooperation with China in all fields is a basic policy of Pakistan. He noted that despite the trade deficit with China the overall trend of Pakistan-China economic and trade cooperation is satisfactory. Pakistan hopes to launch the negotiations on Pakistan-China free trade area as soon as possible and expand bilateral cooperation in such fields as port construction, sea route dredging and power plant.
Musharraf introduced his views on the South Asia situation and his recent visit to India, noting that Pakistan-India relations are heading towards normalization. Pakistan suggests establishing a negotiation mechanism to solve the problems with India step by step.
According to Hu, he admires that Pakistan insists on solving all the problems with India through peaceful dialogue and actively push forward the regional cooperation of South Asia. China will continue to play a constructive role to promote peace, security and stability of South Asia.
The leaders of both countries also exchanged opinions on other international issues of common concern.
