Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Indonesian President Susilo

On the morning of April 25, 2005, President Hu Jintao held talks with Indonesian President Susilo in Jakarta and exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations and regional and international issues of common concern. After the talk, both sides signed The Joint Statement On Establishing The Strategic Partnership Between The People's Republic of China and The Republic of Indonesia and announced to establish the strategic partnership that is targeted at boosting the peace, stability and prosperity of the two countries and people and benefiting the two countries and the people benefit and making new contribution to the solidarity and cooperation among the developing countries and the peace and development cause of mankind.
Before the talk, Susilo held a grand welcome ceremony for Hu Jintao in the square of the presidential residence. The military band performed the national anthems of the two countries and the sound of salute echoed in the air. Hu Jintao paraded the honor guard of the Indonesian military forces. Later the heads of both states and their wives held a courtesy meeting. Susilo and his wife extended a warm welcome to Hu Jintao and his wife Liu Yongqing's visit to Indonesia. Hu Jintao and his wife expressed that this is a very important visit. They firmly believed that this visit would certainly bring about the far-reaching influence on the further development of friendly relations between China and Indonesia. During the meeting, Hu Jintao congratulated Indonesia upon the successful holding of Asia-Africa Summit and the commemoration events of the 50th anniversary of Bandung Conference and its contribution to promoting the solidarity and cooperation among the Asian and African countries. He believed that the establishment of new Asia-Africa strategic partnership at the conference has become the important milestone of strengthening the solidarity and cooperation among the Asian and African countries. The two heads of state both believed that the Declaration on the New Asia-Africa Strategic Partnership signed by the leaders at the conference is of great significance. China and Indonesia will make joint efforts with all sides to implement the achievements at this conference and advance the mutually beneficial cooperation and common development. Concerning China's relationship with Indonesia, Hu Jintao indicated that since the two countries reestablished diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have maintained a rapid, healthy and stable development momentum, which is inspiring. Our two countries are good neighbors and two big developing countries with important influence in the region. In the view of the history or the reality, the development of friendly cooperation between China and Indonesia accords with the fundamental interests of both countries and is conducive to the peace and development of the region and the world at large. We are confident in the beautiful future of the development of bilateral relationship. Hu Jintao expressed that in order to drive China's strategic partnership with Indonesia for substantial progresses, benefit the people of the two countries and make new contribution to the peace and development of the region and the world, the Chinese side raises the suggestions as follows. First, to strengthen the strategic consultation of both countries, realize the mutual visits of the heads of state within this year, expand the exchange between the governments, parliaments and parties of both sides and deepen the strategic cooperation between the two countries in various fields. Second, to expand the economic and trade cooperation, bring the regional and complementary advantages into play, further expand the market, strengthen the cooperation in such fields as infrastructure construction, the exploitation of oil and gas resource, agriculture and fishery and increase the annual bilateral trade volume to US$ 20 billion within three years. Third, to strengthen the security cooperation, establish the defense and security consultation mechanism, intensify the exchanges of military staffs of both countries and the cooperation in such non-traditional security fields as anti-terrorism, the fight against transnational crimes and anti-drug and enhance the security dialogue on the sea. Fourth, to strengthen the cooperation in disaster prevention and mitigation and post-disaster reconstruction. Indonesia is the country seriously hit by the disaster of earthquake and tsunami of the Indian Ocean last year. The Chinese government and people are deeply concerned of it. The Chinese side decides to provide some additional aids and is willing to help Indonesia improve the ability to prevent and mitigate the disaster according to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Scientific and Technological Cooperation in the Field of Earthquake and Tsunami between China and Indonesia signed this time and the Cooperation Agreement on Establishing the Indonesian Earthquake Monitoring Network Aided by China reached not long ago. Fifth, to expand the social exchange, enhance the cooperation in such fields as culture, education, tourism, sports and impress the friendliness of both countries into the hearts of both people by taking the opportunity of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 600th anniversary of Zheng He's voyage to the Atlantic Ocean. The Chinese side is preparing to open a consulate general in Surabaja within this year. China welcomes Indonesia to open the consulate general in Shanghai as soon as possible. Sixth, to advance the development of China-ASEAN relations and the East Asian cooperation process. The Chinese side will continue to support the establishment of ASEAN Community and the integration process of ASEAN, hold a positive attitude towards boosting the East Asian cooperation and support ASEAN to continuously play a leading role in this area. Seventh, to enhance the solidarity and cooperation among the developing countries. The Chinese side supports Indonesia to play greater role in the international and regional issues. China is willing to strengthen the coordination and cooperation with Indonesia in on multilateral occasions such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) so as to contribute to establishing a new, fair and rational international political and economic order and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. Susilo expressed that the seven-point suggestions put forward by President Hu entirely accord with the consideration of Indonesia and he also made positive response to these suggestions one by one. He emphasized that Indonesia highly comments on the active role played by China in the Asian and international issues and Indonesia welcomes China to continue its role. The foundation of Indonesia-China relations is solid. The decision made by both sides to establish the strategic partnership will certainly broaden the fields of friendly cooperation between the two countries. Susilo reaffirmed that Indonesia unswervingly pursues one-China policy and supports the realization of China's reunification. He also appreciated the Chinese government for its support to Indonesia's efforts to maintain the national solidarity and stability. After the meeting, the two heads of state attended the signing ceremony of several bilateral cooperative documents and met with domestic and foreign journalists together. They were conformably satisfied with the achievements of this visit and reaffirmed making joint efforts to execute the common consensus reached in this visit in a bid to expand the friendly cooperation between the two countries.
