Hu Jintao Attends the Commemoration Events of the 50th Anniversary of Bandung Conference

On April 24,2005, the leaders of countries attending the Asia-Africa Summit arrived at Bandung from Jakarta, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Bandung Conference to carry forward the spirit of Bandung Conference under the new environment, enhance the solidarity and cooperation among the Asian and African countries and jointly create a beautiful future. President of China Hu Jintao attended the commemoration events. It is of clear sky, fresh air, gentle breeze and comfortable sunshine in Bandung in April, full of the happy atmosphere of festival. The streets from the airport to the Savoy Homann hotel where leaders gathered were filled with people coming to express their welcome. They waved the national flags of the Asian and African countries and welcomed the arrival of distinguished guests. The banners of welcoming Asian and African leaders are hung in the main streets and the flowers in the parterres are blooming. At about 9:00 a.m., the commemoration events started. Hu Jintao and the leaders from Asia, Africa and other regions walked to the old site of the Bandung Conference, the Independence High-rise, along the Asian-African street from the Savoy Homann Hotel. Hu Jintao, President Susilo and other leaders walked in the front rank. While they walked, they waved to the people who were standing on the two sides of street. This is a historic walk. When the Bandung Conference was held 50 years ago, the Asian and African leaders walked to the Independence High-rise to attend the conference from the Savoy Homann hotel. Today all leaders attending the Asia-Africa Summit walked along the same route again to review the history and carry forward the Bandung spirit of solidarity, friendship and cooperation. Having arrived at the Independence High-rise, leaders took a group photo. In the commemoration events, President of Indonesia Susilo firstly delivered a speech. He said that the leaders of the two continents of Asia and Africa walked together and held the first Asia-Africa Conference right here 50 years ago. They constituted the guideline for dealing with the international relationship and expressed their wishes of safeguarding the peace and promoting the development. The Bandung spirit incarnated in this conference guided the Asian and African countries to move forward. The Asia-Africa Summit ended in April 23 has decided to establish the new Asia-African strategic partnership. The Asian and African countries will utilize their own abundant resources and great creative spirits to solve the development problems they are facing, conquer the poverty and enhance the peace and prosperity and social justice. President Obasanjo of Nigeria, Prime Minister Singh of India, President George Maxwell Richards of Trinidad and Tobago and other leaders delivered speeches respectively representing Asia, Africa and other regions and countries. They expressed that the Bandung spirit formed 50 years ago has still been of strong vitality. As long as to Asian and African countries strengthen the solidarity and cooperation, they can certainly grasp opportunities, deal with challenges brought by the economic globalization and realize the regional stability, development and prosperity. In the commemorative meeting, the two chairmen of the Asia-Africa Summit, President of Indonesia Susilo and President of South Africa Mbeki officially signed the Declaration on the Asia-African New Strategic Partnership, marking that the declaration is launched for implementation. The declaration has been passed in the Asia-Africa Summit ended in April 23 and other leaders in the Summit have also signed it. At the noon of the same day, the leaders attending the commemorative meeting participated in the tree planting activity. They have planted different kinds of trees from the Asian and African continents, expressing their wishes that the new strategic partnership established by the two Asian and African continents will be well established and vigorously developed. After the beginning of the tree planting activity, Hu Jintao put down a plate representing China in front of a tree and watered the tree. From April 18 to 24, 1955, the Asia-Africa Summit was held in Bandung, so the Asia-Africa Summit is also called the Bandung Conference. The representatives from 29 Asian and African countries and regions attended the summit in that year. This is the first international meeting initiated and held by the Asian and African countries. A series of important issues concerning the Asian and African countries were discussed together in this summit. Hu Jintao delivered an important speech in this Asia-Africa Summit. He indicated that the Bandung Conference is an important milestone of the Asia-African national liberation movement and a great pioneering move in the history of international relationship. From then on, as an independent and emerging force, the Asian and African developing countries have stepped to the international stage more powerfully. The ten principles of dealing with the international relationship constituted in the Bandung Conference have settled an important foundation for establishing a new, fair and rational international political and economic order. The Bandung spirit of solidarity, friendship and cooperation advocated by the summit has become the powerful impetus to encourage most developing countries to unswervingly strive for realizing the national rejuvenation and promoting the human's progress for half century. It has advanced the joint self-empowerment of the Asian and African countries and promoted the peace and development of the entire world.
