At the invitation of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of the Republic of Italy, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council of the People's Republic of China will pay an official visit to the Republic of Italy from May 6 to 9, 2004. During his visit, Premier Wen will hold talks with his Italian counterpart, and the two sides will jointly attend the symposium on two-way investment between China and Italy in Rome. Wen will also meet with the Italian President and Speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives, and visit some key industrial enterprises and the Toscana Region.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy 34 years ago, the bilateral relations have been developing smoothly. In recent years, the two countries have witnessed frequent exchanges of top-level visits, continuously expanded cooperation in economy and trade, as well as fruitful results of exchanges in such areas as science and technology, culture and education. Bilateral trade volume reached a record high at US$11.7 billion last year. In last October, Prime Minister Berlusconi, as the rotating president of the European Union (EU), visited China and attended the Sixth China-EU Leaders' Meeting, which have further promoted China-Italy and China-EU relations.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to Italy's significant influence in European and international affairs. Premier Wen's visit to Italy is aimed at upgrading China-Italy relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and pushing mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in various fields into a new stage for development.

Primo appuntamento è la visita del Premier cinese Wen Jiabao: il Primo Ministro cinese visita l'Italia dal 6 al 9 maggio - nel quadro del suo viaggio in Europa - a testimonianza dell'importante ruolo che la dirigenza cinese attribuisce all'Italia.

Wen Jiabao avrà estesi colloqui con i Vertici istituzionali del nostro Paese, in particolare con il Presidente della Repubblica, con il Presidente del Consiglio e con i Presidenti delle Camere e incontrerà il Ministro degli Esteri Franco Frattini in occasione di un ricevimento a Villa Madama.

La visita è imperniata su temi concreti: è infatti prevista, nel corso degli incontri, la firma di numerosi Accordi di carattere politico, economico e culturale, volti a consolidare le relazioni bilaterali in tutti i settori e ad approfondire la conoscenza reciproca attraverso frequenti consultazioni.

Il Primo Ministro cinese, insieme al Presidente Berlusconi, parteciperà inoltre al Seminario sugli investimenti reciproci che avrà luogo a Roma, presso la Confindustria, in quei giorni. Wen Jiabao visiterà anche alcune importanti industrie italiane ed effettuerà una visita istituzionale e culturale in Toscana.
