Having concluded his official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy, and Turkey and having attended the 8th ASEM Summit and the 13th China-EU Summit held in Brussels, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council left Istanbul for China by special plane at 9:00 p.m. local time.
Premier Wen's tour is characterized by tight schedule and rich contents. During the 8-day tour, he visited 5 countries, attended two meetings, and participated in more than 70 activities.
During the visit to Greece, Premier Wen Jiabao met with Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister George Papandreou. The two sides signed a number of cooperation documents and issued the Joint Statement on Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Wen also delivered a speech entitled “Reinforce Confidence to Overcome the Current Difficulties” in the Greek parliament. During the visit to Belgium, Wen met with Belgian King Albert II and talked with Prime Minister Lai Temu. The two sides signed a number of cooperation documents in such fields as nuclear power, telecommunications, and quality inspection. During the visit to Italy, Premier Wen Jiabao met with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the two sides signed 17 cooperation documents and agreements. The two prime ministers also attended the celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the "Chinese Cultural Year" activities. During the visit to Turkey, Premier Wen Jiabao met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the two sides signed eight cooperation documents. Wen also had talks with representatives from the Turkish cultural and business communities.
At the 8th ASEM Summit, Premier Wen had an in-depth exchange of views with the leaders of other countries on global economic governance, sustainable development, international and regional issues and the Asia-Europe cooperation process and reached important consensus. Premier Wen, as the host of the previous meeting, delivered a speech entitled "Advancing the In-Depth Development of the Asia-Europe Cooperation Process” in the opening session. Premier Wen also met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-bak and other foreign leaders. Premier Wen also had talks with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
During the 13th EU-China Summit, Premier Wen Jiabao co-chaired the meeting with President Van Rompuy of the European Council and President Jose Manuel Barroso of the European Commission and the two sides issued a joint communiqué. Wen also attended the 6th China-EU Business Summit and the opening ceremony of the first EU-China High-Level Cultural Forum.
In addition, Wen was also invited to Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the two sides issued a joint communiqué.
