2005/12/10

On December 9, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Portuguese Parliament Speaker Jaime Gama in Lisbon.

Wen said that after the smooth resolution of the Macao issue, there is no outstanding problem between both sides any more. In recent years, bilateral relations have enjoyed sound development momentum. Both sides have witnessed frequent exchange of high-level visits and continuously deepened mutual political trust. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been developing rapidly with fruitful exchanges in other areas. Both countries share identical or similar views on many major international issues and have maintained sound communication and coordination in the UN and other international organizations. The purpose of his current visit to Portugal is to work with Portuguese leaders to discuss the possibility of enhancing the level of bilateral friendly cooperative relations and strengthening comprehensive cooperation in various areas.

Wen noted that both the National People's Congress of China and the Portuguese Parliament have played an important role in the political life of the two countries and injected new content into the development of state-to-state relations. He hoped that the two Parliaments will further exchanges and cooperation and jointly make contributions to promoting all-round development of bilateral relations.

Gama indicated that all Portuguese parties support both sides to develop friendly relations. Bilateral political relations remain sound and at present both sides should focus on strengthening economic cooperation, in particular expanding investment and trade exchanges with an eye not only to bilateral relations, but also to EU-China relations and relations between Portuguese-speaking countries and China. The Portuguese Parliament will continue supporting bilateral cooperation in various areas.
