On March 13, 2008, Navtej Sarna, spokesman of Indian Ministry of External Affairs took an interview with Xinhua News Agency on Taiwan issue. The full text is as follows. Xinhua: Disregarding the strong opposition of the international community, the Taiwan authority is stepping up to promote the referendum on joining the UN under the name of Taiwan and to seek Taiwan independence. It poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the Asia and Pacific region. What's India's attitude and comment on the dangerous activities of the Taiwan authority. Sarna: The government of India has followed One China policy and does not have diplomatic or official relations with Taiwan. India's policy in this respect is consistent, and has conveyed to the government of the People's Republic of China on several occasions. Most recently, during the Prime Minister of India's visit to China in January 2008. In the joint vision statement issued, the two sides stated and I could quote: the Indian side recalls that India was among the first countries to recognize that there is one China, and that is one China policy and has remained unaltered. The Indian side states it will continue to abide by One China policy and oppose any activity that is against One China principal. The Chinese expressed appreciation for the Indian position. Our prime minister's meetings with the Chinese leaders conveyed India's One China policy clear and consistent. India has never supported Taiwan independence or UN membership. I think that should make our position clear.
