On 23 April 2008, the opening ceremony of the first "Chinese Language and Culture Week", which is jointly organized by the Language Centre of Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, was officiated at the Chancellor Hall of UBD. The objective of the cultural event is to provide the Bruneian people with an opportunity to understand the brilliant and profound culture of China, further promote the understanding and friendship between the two countries and their peoples, and push forward the all-round development of China-Brunei relations. About 500 visitors from the Bruneian government, diplomatic missions in Brunei, Chinese communities as well as Malay, Arabic and Chinese schools attended the ceremony.
To begin with, Vice Chancellor of UBD Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail bin Hj Duraman and H.E. Chinese Ambassador Tong Xiaoling addressed the function respectively, which was followed by the donation by H.E. Ambassador Tong to UBD of books and audio and visual materials which illustrate Chinese learning, Chinese traditional arts and development of modern China. Then, H.E. Ambassador Tong and Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail cut the ribbon together, launching the cultural activity. Chinese martial arts coach Mr. Li Hui and his students staged exciting performances which were acclaimed by the whole audience. Enjoying the background music played live by some Chinese traditional instrumentalists, the visitors toured a dozen of exhibition booths, which cover general information of China, history of China-Brunei friendship, 2008 Beijing Olympics, Chinese traditional arts, art of Chinese cuisine and tea, Chinese languages and courses, etc. Especially crowded and jollifying was the booth of Beijing Olympics, where people were flocking for a photo with the Fuwa (mascot of Beijing Olympics) model and voicing their support for the successful hosting of Olympics by Beijing. The "Chinese Language and Culture Week" will last a period of 4 days, during which workshops on Chinese cuisine, calligraphy and martial arts will be organized and numerous Chinese movies will be released to general public. The cultural event has also gained financial support from some Chinese enterprises in local Brunei.
