Chinese Engineers Remembered

2010/04/08

On 5 April 2010, the traditional Chinese Tomb-Sweeping Day, Ambassador Zhang Keyuan and staff members of the Chinese Embassy in Malta visited the graves of two Chinese engineers who lost their lives during the construction of the No.6 Dry Dock in Malta in 1979. They laid wreaths at the tombs and paid silent tribute to the two engineers.

Mr. Xu Huizhong and Mr. Gu Yanzhao were among 800 Chinese technicians, engineers and workers who participated in the construction of the dry dock, a project of bilateral economic aid by the Chinese government in the 1970s. Mr Xu died of a site accident and was awarded the Medal for Service to the Republic of Malta. Mr. Gu died of cancer in Malta during the construction.

With a total capacity of 300,000 tons, the No. 6 dry dock is not only the largest dock in Malta, but also one of the largest in the Mediterranean region. It was nicknamed by the local people as "Red China Dock" and has become a symbol of Sino-Maltese friendship.
