Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you very much for your kind presence. First of all, let me express my gratefulness to the government and people of Chuuk state for allowing me to come to the Pacific diver's paradise for the third time. The beautiful Truk lagoon has been written into my mind and my heart has been hit by the love stick each time I step on this land. Thank you for your hospitality.
We are here to welcome MS. CHIEF MAILO back to Chuuk state of the FSM after maintenance in Hubei province of China. This is one of the most superior passenger-cargo vessel navigating amongst the Micronesia Islands in the Western Pacific Ocean. 6 years ago, the Chinese government and people delivered her to the government and people of the FSM, and then to the government and people of Chuuk in particular. She has brought many conveniences to improve the local transportation and living standard of the people of Chuuk. Ever since then, she worked continuously until she was too tired and needed to rest and recharge. She was towed back to shipyard after surmounting numerous difficulties and dangers and repaired on the basis of the original design, changed the broken equipments. Together with the National Government, the Chuuk State Government, the technical personnel and workers from Chuuk, the engineers from Wuhan Nanhua High Speed Ship Engineering Co. Ltd of the China worked around the clock and tackled numerous unexpected difficulties. She looks more beautiful and energetic after been taken good care of for several months. Let me say a big "Thank you" for the unremitted efforts by everybody involved. Let me say a big "Welcome home" to Ms. Chief Mailo.
It is because of your joint work that we have such a celebration today. Now, on behalf of the government and people of China, I'm honored and very pleased to return MS. CHIEF MAILO to the government and people of the Federated States of Micronesia and the government and people of the Chuuk state. It is my heartfelt wish that MS. CHIEF MAILO will give better service to the people of the Chuuk state.
The repair project of Ms. Chief Mailo is again a good manifestation of our friendship. This is only one of the many projects that cooperatively implemented by China and the FSM. Ever since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the FSM on September 11th, 1989, the relations between our two countries have flourished day by day. In addition to political and cultural exchanges, we have maintained a smooth development in bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Let me just take some projects in Chuuk state for example: we have completed the project of renovation of the terminal of Chuuk International Airport. We have built two Biogas Pilot Projects which have been operating very well. We have the medical team of five Chinese doctors working in the Chuuk hospital. We have more and more people from Chuuk to attend the human resources training programs in China. More and more Chuuk students were enrolled by Chinese scholarship and went to study in China. Here I would like to mention in particular the five Chinese doctors working in the Chuuk hospital. They have been working very hard and brought benefits to the people Chuuk state with superb medical skills and high medical ethics, some cases are well known not only in Chuuk, but also in the FSM and the pacific region as well. All the five doctors are here with us today. Let's give them a big applause.
The cooperation in those areas demonstrates the friendship between China and the FSM. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have, and who are still performing the Chinese Government assisted programs in the Chuuk state, as well as in the FSM, for their contribution to the welfare of the people of the FSM and for their dedication of enhancing the friendly relations between our two countries and peoples.
China and the FSM are both developing countries. We are brothers and sisters. We understand each other and we trust each other. We shall help each other and we shall learn from each other. China is proud to be among the first countries to recognize the independence and sovereign right of the FSM, and China is also proud to support the FSM's membership in the United Nations in 1991. China will not forget the strong support from the government and people of the FSM to the great cause of unification of our motherland.
The project of maintenance of Ms. Chief Mailo is not the last one. China will continuously provide assistance to the FSM, including Chuuk and other states, to seek common social and economic development. Following Ms. Chief Mailo, "Hapilmohol-1", the other vessel donated by the Chinese government, will be dry-docked in China soon after. We are discussing a concessional loan to help the FSM to rehabilitate and create onshore fishery infrastructure in each of the four states. We will build more environment-friendly biogas projects in the FSM to bring clean energy to the people.
With a population consists more than half of the FSM, the Chuuk state holds a place of great mark in China-FSM relations. We will further promote the establishment of sistership between Guangdong Province of China and the Chuuk State of the FSM. I believe that with our concerted efforts, the prospect for the future development of friendly relations between China and the FSM will be even brighter and these relations will bring more benefits to the two peoples.
As the Chinese Ambassador to the FSM, I will do my utmost to further strengthen our strong ties. I look forward to your generous support and assistance. Let's work closely in realizing our common goals. That is to fulfill the nation-building task of our two countries.
