Speech at 2011 Chinese New Year Celebration
By H.E. Ambassador Liu Xinsheng
Your Excellency Minister of State Dr. Terezya Luoga Huvisa,
Prior to the coming of the Chinese New Year of Rabbit, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, I would like to extend my New Year greetings to the Chinese community based in Tanzania, to Tanzanian friends in all circles and foreign diplomats in Tanzania who are sharing the festival merriness with Chinese people.
China and Tanzania are all-weather friends. The brotherly bilateral friendly relations have withstood the changes of international situation and grown closer than ever. With the constant development of bilateral relations, more and more Chinese companies and businessmen come to beautiful Tanzania for cooperation, exchange and development. They work hard in Tanzania, enjoy strong friendship with Tanzanian people, bring advanced technology and modern management expertise to Tanzanian people, and contribute to the development of Tanzanian society and economy. According to statistics, bilateral trade volume in 2008 and 2009 reached 992 million and 1.106 billion US dollars respectively, and amounts to 1.363 billion US dollars even from January to October 2010. Until last September, about 240 companies with Chinese capital have been registered in Tanzania with 600 million US dollars in total capital, creating 60,000 jobs for Tanzanian people. Currently, 114 projects that valued 2.299 billion US dollars are under construction by the Chinese contractors, and these projects employ nearly 20,000 local workers in Tanzania.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Chinese New Year has been the most important Chinese festival over thousands of years with the richest Chinese cultural profundity, and is also a family-reunion festival most cherished by Chinese people. It symbolizes industriousness, auspiciousness, harmony and good wishes. The celebration starts on the New Year's Eve and ends with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month of Chinese lunar year, lasting 16 days with New Year's Eve and the first day of the first lunar month being the climax. With an aim to letting Chinese people who have to work in Tanzania during the traditional festival enjoy the festival happiness, promoting the understanding of Tanzanian people about Chinese culture, and offering a chance for Tanzanian people to share the festival happiness, the 1st Chinese New Year celebration branded "Focus on Africa, Chinese New Year in Tanzania" was held successfully last year in Dar es Salaam. With full support from Chinese and Tanzanian relevant organizations and active participation of Chinese people in Tanzania, Tanzanian friends, actors and artists, this Chinese New Year celebration will surely be remembered as a great event in the history of China-Tanzanian exchanges and cooperation. Chinese New Year celebration is the natural inevitability of the growth of bilateral friendly relations, and also acts as an accelerator to promote the development of bilateral friendship and exchanges.
May China and Tanzania enjoy prosperity and their people happiness! May China-Tanzania friendship be ever-green!
