On March 30, chaired by Ambassador Li Baodong, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for March, the Security Council adopted unanimously resolution 1975 on the issue of Côte d'Ivoire.
After the voting, Ambassador Li said in his explanation of vote that China is seriously concerned over the deteriorating security situation in Côte d'Ivoire recently. We call on all parties in the country to stop violence and armed confrontations immediately and resolve their disputes through dialogue and consultation.
Ambassador Li said that China maintains that the crisis triggered by general elections in Côte d'Ivoire should be resolved by peaceful means. We appreciate the efforts made by the African Union and the Economic Community of Western African States to seek a political solution to the crisis, and call on parties in Côte d'Ivoire to provide positive and comprehensive cooperation in this regard.
Ambassador Li said that China's position on the ICC remains unchanged. China always holds that the UN peacekeeping operations should abide by the principle of neutrality. We hope the UNOCI will fulfill its mandate in a strict and comprehensive manner, contribute to peaceful settlement of the Côte d'Ivoire crisis and avoid the risk of becoming a party of the conflict.
