Ambassador Li Baodong Attends Opening Ceremony of Photo Exhibition--Xinhua Galleries on Green Energy and Sustainable Development
From Chinese Mission to the United Nations
A photo exhibition entitled "Xinhua Galleries" on Green Energy and Sustainable Development co-sponsored by the Chinese Mission and Xinhua News Agency was launched on June 6, 2011 in the UN Headquarters in New York. Ambassador Li Baodong, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Present at the ceremony were also Mr. Kiyotaka Akasaka, UN Under-Secretary-General for communications and public information, Mr. Hu Zhiqiang, Deputy Chief of North American Bureau of Xinhua News Agency and other guests.
Ambassador Li said that the Chinese government puts great emphasis on sustainable development and green economy, and has made remarkable progress in this regard. By focusing on scientific development and changing the outdated mode of economic growth, China is striving to build a resource-efficient and environment-friendly society. China has come a long way in pursuing a path of sustainable development suited to its national conditions, and has made its own contribution to the global endeavor of sustainable development.
Under-Secretary-General Akasaka expressed thanks and congratulations to the Chinese Mission and Xinhua News Agency for hosting this exhibition. He said that the exhibition is timely and of great significance. He hoped that the exhibition will enhance people's understanding of green economy and sustainable development, and create a favorable atmosphere for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Brazil next year.
The photo exhibition features over 40 photos taken by Xinhua photographers and journalists. They present the efforts made by China and other countries in the field of sustainable development over the past decade and the achievements they have scored.
Ambassador Li also outlined to the press and guests the remarkable economic and social achievements made by China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and the main tasks laid out by China's 12th Five-year Plan.
