In the evening of Aug. 14, 2011, the Classical Music Development Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago held "East Meets West" concert at NAPA (the National Academy for the Performing Arts) in Port of Spain. Two young artistes, Chen Ke (Coco Chen) from China, and Natalia Dopwell from Trinidad and Tobago, jointly performed on the stage. H.E. Mr. Yang Youming, Chinese Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, and his wife Mrs. Geng Hailing were present.
The artistes brought to the audience master pieces of Wolfgang A. Mozart, Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss, Giacomo Puccini and others. Coco Chen then presented some well-known classic and pop pieces by Chinese musicians, like Rose's Three Wishes by Huang Zi and Fantasy by Zuo Huanshen. They beautifully brought out what it truly meant for "East Meets West" with their performances, and won rounds of applause. Coco Chen was born in Shanghai and graduated from the voice studio of Kathryn Cowdrick and piano studio of Tony Caramia at the Eastman School of Music in New York. She is a professional collaborative pianist, soprano, composer and actress, winning number of international prizes. Natalia Dopwell is a soprano fast gaining reputation and a rising star of classic music in Trinidad and Tobago. She and Coco Chen were schoolmates in New York. On Aug. 11, Ambassador Yang met with Coco Chen and Natalia Dopwell at the Chinese Embassy. He welcomed the young artistes for the "East Meets West" concert. He highly praised Coco Chen as the first Chinese artiste who had come to Trinidad and Tobago to perform classical music and for the contribution she was making to the cultural exchange between China and Trinidad and Tobago. He encouraged the young artiste to keep on making effort, and present more great Chinese musical works to the world.
