(From Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata)
2012/03/04

On the evening of March 2nd, Mr. Arup Biswas, Minister of State of West Bengal Youth Services Department held a welcome reception for the Chinese Youth Delegation headed by Mr. Liu Yawu, President of Youth & Children Research Association, Tianjin. Chinese Consul General Zhang Lizhong attended the reception at invitation and delivered a speech.

In his speech, Consul General Zhang Lizhong reviewed the long history of people-to-people exchanges between China and India characterized by famous Chinese monks – Faxian and Xuanzang's visit to India, Rabindranath Tagore's visit to China and the Indian National Congress Medical Mission to China during the Second World War. He believed that through the visit to Kolkata, Chinese Youth Delegation would better understand West Bengal people's hospitality, the potential of local economy and the diversity of Indian culture. He wished the Chinese Youth Delegation to bring Indian people's good sentiment towards China back home and let more Chinese people know about India.

Mr. Arup Biswas warmly welcomed Chinese Youth Delegation on behalf of West Bengal Government and the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He conveyed the best wishes from Mamata Banerjee to all the Chinese brothers and sisters. He highlighted Kolkata as a great city, which is the hometown of the first Asian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and the Brave Saint Swami Vivekananda. He hoped Chinese Youth Delegation to get an opportunity to glance through the social and culture life of Indian people during a short span of time.

After the speeches, wonderful performances heated up the stage. The song-dance drama reflecting the life of Swami Vivekananda and the beautiful dances showcasing the different cultures of India won big applauses from Chinese Youth Delegation. The hip-pop dance and Chinese song performed by Chinese youngsters let the party reach its climax.

2011 was proclaimed as "China-India Exchange Year" by the leaders of the two countries and a 500-member Indian Youth Delegation visited China in the same year. This year, Chinese Youth Delegation paid a reciprocal visit to India.
