Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Lv Youqing at the Cemetery for Chinese Experts in Tanzania on the Qingming Fesitval
From Chinese Embassy in Tanzania
Honorable Nundu, Minister of Transportation of Tanzania,
Today is the traditional Chinese Qingming Festival. Qingming Festival is the day for worshipping ancestors and commemorating martyrs according to Chinese tradition. "To miss the deceased and to condole the loyal souls in a foreign land". Chinese Embassy staff and the representatives of Chinese companies, communities and overseas students here in Tanzania, together with the representatives from Tanzania government and people, are gathering here and holding this memorial service, to express our respect, grief and condolence to the martyrs, who have made great contributions to promote China-Tanzania friendship, Sino-Africa friendship and economic and social development of Tanzania.
More than 40 years ago, being trusted by their home country and people, more than 50,000 Chinese brothers and sisters came to this vast continent. Experiencing all kinds of hardships, working together with Tanzanian and Zambian friends, they had built the Tazara with extraordinary perseverance and supernormal efforts. When the Uhuru Railway had been constructed, some of them leave here, far away from home.
There are 69 Chinese experts as well as technical and engineering staff who have been resting at this cemetery, including 51 for Tazara and 18 for other development projects. Among the 69 martyrs, 18 were from my home province, Sichuan Province of China.
May the martyrs' souls rest in peace. Mountains and oceans cannot stop fellow countrymen from missing you. Worrying that you feel lonely, President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiaobao and other top leaders and important delegations have been here to lay wreath and show their respect when visiting Tanzania. On each of the Qingming Festival, Chinese Embassy staff and representatives of Chinese companies, communities and overseas students here in Tanzania come to express their boundless grief. In the 40 years, Chinese government has renovated the cemetery time and again and has arranged personnel to take care of the cemetery.
May the martyrs' souls rest in peace. Different veins share same affection and the Tanzanian people will always remember you. Tanzanian President, Vice President and Prime Minister and representatives of all sectors of society have been here for worship. Today, Minister Nundu, Permanent Secretary Chambo, Major General Kijuu as well as more than 100 friends from different sectors of Tanzania are coming here to attend this memorial ceremony. They always say that just as Tazara, the names of the martyrs will be always in their minds.
May the martyrs' souls rest in peace. As lofty as the Kilimanjaro Mountain, the historical monument of China-Tanzania friendship cemented by your blood and sweat stands high in the heart of both Chinese and Tanzanian people. The endurable and unbreakable friendship stands up to all tests and develops forward. The all-weather cooperation partnership between our two countries is featured by political mutual trust, economical win-win cooperation and cultural exchanges.
May the martyrs' souls rest in peace. You love your home country, delicate yourself to Africa and here indeed is your second hometown. Tanzanian people today enjoy political stability, economic development, social harmony and constantly improvement of well-being. May all these remarkable progress console the spirits of the martyrs.
During his visit in last November, Comrade Liu Yunshan have pointed out that, "the spirit of Chinese people was clearly shown during the construction of Tazara and it is a spirit of greatest love, a spirit of dedication, a spirit of determination and a spirit of struggle." The best way for us to express our condolence is to give full play to the spirits of greatest love, dedication, determination and struggle.
The Embassy staff should remember the contribution made by the martyrs for consolidating China-Tanzania and Sino-African friendship, follow in their footsteps and carry forward their spirits. We should learn the spirits of greatest love, dedication, determination and struggle, keep pace with the times, keep forging ahead and make new and greater contribution for the development of China-Tanzania and Sino-African relations in the new situation and circumstance.
Chinese compatriots who are working, living and studying in Tanzania should try your best to make tangible and positive contributions in your own fields, to promote economical and social development of Tanzania and to deepen win-win cooperation in various fields. Each of you is an ambassador, who can carry friendship, promote understanding, deepen trust and close distance. In the eyes of Tanzania friends, you represent China and Chinese people. Every single drop contributes to a river. I hope your words and deeds could enhance friendship and good feeling between our two peoples.
According to traditional Chinese culture, Qingming Festival has another indication. "To sow crops around the Qingming Festival", it says in a Chinese old saying. Qingming marks the beginning of planting season. The elder generations have already planted the seeds of China-Tanzania friendship. Over the past 48 years, thanks to the efforts made by numerous people, China -Tanzania friendship takes roots, grows, blooms and bear fruit. In the new era, we are obliged to follow in their footsteps and try to carry forward their spirits to make the tree of China-Tanzania friendship bloom and flourish forever.
The martyrs sacrificed for supporting Tanzania are immortal!
May China-Tanzania friendship be everlasting!
